The Lepus is associated with the Goddess Of Spring, Ostara. Folklore goes that the goddess came across a bird that was dying from the harsh winter. To save its life, she transformed him in to a Lepus - meaning hare in Latin. Once a year the hare laid eggs to show thanks, and pay homage to his former life as a bird. These eggs were coloured & gifted to others to mark the start of spring and the ending of winter. This became the origins of the Easter Bunny.
